%E3%80%80%3Cb%3ENYK%3C%2Fb%3E+celebrated+its+140th+anniversary+on+October+1.+We+asked+President+Takaya+Soga+to+look+back+on+the+history+of+%3Cb%3ENYK%3C%2Fb%3E+since+it+was+founded+in+1885+through+the+merger+of+Mitsubishi+Mail+Steamship+Company+and+Kyodo+Unyu+Kaisha%2C+and+to+share+his+thoughts+on+the+150th+anniversary.+%3Cbr%3E%28Interviewers%3A+Takehiko+Hatano+and+Yohei+Misaki%29+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--I%E2%80%99d+like+to+start+by+asking+your+thoughts+on+celebrating+the+140th+anniversary.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CSince+our+founding%2C+we+have+pursued+what+society+and+people+want.+Our+value+lies+in+accurately+grasping+the+needs+of+society+and+people+and+responding+to+them.+After+identifying+needs%2C+we+have+continued+to+invest+in+growth%2C+keeping+an+eye+on+how+the+world+will+change.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+financial+position+has+improved+dramatically+since+we+experienced+strong+results+thanks+to+the+rise+in+container+freight+rates+caused+by+the+coronavirus+pandemic.+However%2C+we+have+been+able+to+reach+where+we+are+today+because+we+have+continued+to+invest+in+growth+even+during+financially+difficult+times.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CFrom+the+time+of+our+founding%2C+we+recognized+the+importance+of+shipping+to+Japan+as+an+island+nation.+Not+only+the+management+team+but+each+and+every+employee+has+worked+hard+with+a+sense+of+mission+and+pride+in+supporting+the+country+and+its+people.+This+has+been+passed+down+unbroken+as+the+DNA+of+our+group.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWhen+I+re-read+old+documents%2C+I+see+that+our+company+has+always+valued+%E2%80%99technical+capabilities%E2%80%99+and+%E2%80%99human+resources.%E2%80%99+Democracy+has+also+been+respected.+We+want+to+continue+to+cherish+the+%3Cb%3ENYK%3C%2Fb%3E+Group%E2%80%99s+commitment+to+human+resources+and+technology%2C+and+the+style+of+everyone+making+decisions+through+lively+discussions.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Flexibility+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-What+is+your+outlook+for+the+business+environment+surrounding+shipping+and+logistics+companies%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COne+of+the+reasons+behind+the+growing+uncertainty+about+the+future+is+that+the+Trump+administration+in+the+United+States+is+trying+to+change+existing+rules+and+regulations+related+to+trade+and+other+matters.+In+order+for+countries+to+prosper+and+people+to+be+happy+through+trade+activities%2C+certain+international+rules+were+created+with+the+consent+of+each+country.+As+long+as+it+was+adhered+to%2C+it+was+considered+fair.+That+traditional+framework+is+beginning+to+crumble.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+idea+of+putting+one%E2%80%99s+own+country+first+is+spreading%2C+creating+an+environment+in+which+it+is+easy+to+ignore+international+rules.+This+is+creating+uncertainty.+Personally%2C+I+don%E2%80%99t+think+people+will+prosper+and+become+happy+even+if+they+put+their+own+country+first.+I+believe+that+any+move+that+would+significantly+change+the+existing+framework+will+eventually+be+halted%2C+and+a+correction+will+occur.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CHowever%2C+it+is+difficult+to+predict+when+that+correction+will+occur.+It+cannot+be+simply+said+that+things+will+change+once+President+Trump+leaves+office.+That+said%2C+demand+for+freight+transport+is+unlikely+to+decline+significantly.+Geopolitical+risks+and+changes+in+trade+rules+may+result+in+a+one-time%2C+temporary+drop+in+demand.+When+something+like+that+happens%2C+the+most+important+thing+is+to+maintain+the+capacity+to+respond+flexibly.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Largest+acquisition+ever+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--In+July%2C+the+company+decided+to+acquire+a+healthcare+logistics+business+from+a+European+logistics+company+for+approximately+210+billion+yen.+It+is+the+largest+acquisition+ever.+How+is+the+progress+being+made+with+the+core+strategy%2C+which+is+based+on+deepening+core+businesses+and+developing+new+businesses%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CLogistics+is+the+core+of+our+group%E2%80%99s+core+businesses.+In+order+to+further+grow+our+logistics+business%2C+we+are+actively+utilizing+M%26A+%28mergers+and+acquisitions%29+to+address+any+missing+parts+of+our+business.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CSo+far%2C+we+have+acquired+a+US-based+logistics+company+that+handles+Fulfillment+services+from+order+intake+to+delivery%2C+primarily+for+the+retail+industry%2C+and+a+UK-based+logistics+company+that+provides+a+delivery+platform+for+e-commerce+%28EC%29.+Following+on+from+these%2C+we+have+now+decided+to+acquire+a+healthcare+logistics+business+in+Europe.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+healthcare+sector%2C+which+handles+pharmaceuticals+and+other+products%2C+is+expected+to+see+market+expansion.+Accordingly%2C+demand+for+logistics+can+also+be+expected+to+grow.+High-level+transport+quality+control+is+also+required+from+a+technical+standpoint.+We+will+establish+a+business+foundation+in+the+healthcare+sector+and+aim+to+expand+and+stabilize+profits+in+the+logistics+business.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+acquisition+of+%E2%80%99%3Cb%3ENYK%3C%2Fb%3E+Energy+Ocean%E2%80%99+%28NEO%29+as+a+consolidated+subsidiary+in+the+energy+business+is+also+an+extremely+important+investment+for+us.+NEO+was+established+by+taking+over+ENEOS+Ocean%E2%80%99s+shipping+business+other+than+crude+oil+tankers.+We+acquired+80%25+of+NEO%E2%80%99s+shares+for+approximately+76+billion+yen%2C+and+took+over+the+personnel+and+vessels.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+the+energy+business%2C+one+of+the+challenges+was+strengthening+LPG+%28liquefied+petroleum+gas%29+carriers+and+chemical+tankers.+By+acquiring+NEO+as+a+subsidiary%2C+we+were+able+to+expand+our+business+in+both+areas.+We+are+also+continuing+to+invest+in+LNG+%28liquefied+natural+gas%29+carriers%2C+which+has+been+a+key+focus+of+our+investment+to+date.+Although+investment+decisions+are+becoming+more+difficult+due+to+factors+such+as+ship+prices+remaining+high%2C+we+will+make+decisions+without+hesitation+regarding+investments+aimed+at+growth.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Mindset+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--You+aim+to+transform+into+%E2%80%9CA+Global+Company+Headquartered+in+Japan%E2%80%9C+%28an+organization+whose+headquarters+is+in+Japan+but+where+employees+with+diverse+backgrounds+participate+in+decision-making%29.+I+would+like+to+know+what+your+intention+is.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+group+employs+35%2C000+people+worldwide.+The+ideal+situation+would+be+for+each+individual+to+fully+utilize+their+abilities+and+contribute+to+improving+the+company%E2%80%99s+value.+However%2C+as+long+as+we+treat+our+national+staff+at+our+overseas+bases+like+they+are+agents%2C+and+as+long+as+they+also+have+such+mindset%2C+we+will+never+be+able+to+become+a+global+company.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CTo+become+an+organization+where+each+individual+can+work+with+enthusiasm+as+the+main+protagonist%2C+we+need+to+change+our+mindset+both+in+Tokyo+and+at+our+overseas+bases.+We+have+created+a+virtual+organization+called+IIG+%28Inspired+Impact+Group%29%2C+where+leaders+from+major+global+bases+in+Japan%2C+the+United+States%2C+the+United+Kingdom%2C+Singapore%2C+and+China+meet+regularly+to+discuss+ways+to+change+patterns+of+thinking+and+behavior.+%E2%80%99Bringing+value+to+life.%E2%80%99+is+based+on+our+company+history+and+history+in+general.+By+spreading+this+mission%2C+we+hope+to+create+an+opportunity+to+change+our+mindset.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CAmong+our+efforts+related+to+CX+%28corporate+transformation%29+aimed+at+transforming+human+resources%2C+organization%2C+and+group+management%2C+we+are+focusing+most+of+our+efforts+on+changing+our+mindset.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Going+beyond+the+framework+of+logistics+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+has+the+company+responded+to+social+demands+and+continued+to+take+on+challenges+in+each+era%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CLooking+back+at+each+era%2C+the+demand+was+to+enrich+the+country+and+strengthen+the+military%2C+as+well+as+to+promote+industry+and+commerce+during+the+60+years+from+the+company%E2%80%99s+founding+in+1885+to+the+end+of+World+War+II+in+1945.+In+order+to+enrich+Japan+through+industrial+development+and+trade%2C+and+also+from+the+perspective+of+economic+security%2C+it+was+necessary+to+develop+Japan%E2%80%99s+own+shipping+industry.+Just+before+we+were+founded%2C+even+coastal+shipping+in+Japan+was+handled+by+overseas+shipping+companies.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80During+World+War+II%2C+even+merchant+ships+were+requisitioned+to+transport+supplies+to+the+battlefields+and+people+returning+from+the+battlefields.+As+a+result%2C+5%2C312+of+our+employees%2C+mainly+crew+members%2C+lost+their+lives+in+the+line+of+duty.+The+fleet+was+reduced+from+222+ships+to+37.+The+large+ships+were+completely+destroyed%2C+and+the+only+ship+of+over+10%2C000+gross+tons+that+remained+was+the+%E2%80%99Hikawamaru.%E2%80%99+We+lost+our+most+important+assets%2C+our+personnel+and+our+ships%2C+all+at+once.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80The+next+era+was+from+1946+to+1964%2C+when+Japan+signed+the+Treaty+of+San+Francisco+with+the+United+States+and+other+Allied+nations+in+1951.+Japanese+shipping+resumed+regular+shipping+routes%2C+making+a+fresh+start.+During+the+period+of+rapid+economic+growth%2C+imports+and+exports+increased+dramatically%2C+leading+to+larger+and+more+dedicated+vessels%2C+and+the+birth+of+tankers+and+bulk+carriers.+In+1964%2C+shipping+companies+were+reorganized+and+merged+into+six+core+companies.+Although+we+didn%E2%80%99t+have+the+financial+resources%2C+we+were+able+to+make+the+investment+with+the+support+of+the+government.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80Between+1964+and+1984%2C+the+development+of+dedicated+vessels+progressed+further%2C+with+the+launch+of+Japan%E2%80%99s+first+full+container+ship%2C+as+well+as+PCTCs+and+LNG+%28liquefied+natural+gas%29+carriers.+Meanwhile%2C+in+response+to+the+sudden+drop+in+demand+for+crude+oil+tankers+due+to+the+oil+crisis%2C+the+management+at+the+time%2C+with+the+cooperation+of+shipyards%2C+changed+the+tankers+that+had+already+been+ordered+to+other+types+of+ships.+It+was+a+big+decision+to+make+effective+use+of+limited+funds.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWhen+I+joined+the+company+in+1984%2C+the+US+maritime+law+was+amended+to+allow+shipping+companies+that+belong+to+shipping+conferences+to+set+their+own+freight+rates.+This+marked+the+beginning+of+the+loss+of+a+kind+of+privilege+that+exempted+container+ships+from+the+application+of+antitrust+laws.+In+my+second+year+at+the+company%2C+I+was+assigned+to+the+pricing+team+in+the+North+America+section+of+the+Liner+Department%2C+and+I+remember+being+extremely+busy.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CFrom+1985+to+2005%2C+we+were+hit+hard+by+the+rapid+appreciation+of+the+yen+following+the+Plaza+Accord.+In+order+to+maintain+international+competitiveness%2C+the+company+has+been+forced+to+implement+emergency+employment+measures+to+encourage+early+retirement+of+Japanese+seafarers.+While+working+on+emergency+employment+measures%2C+1985+marked+the+100th+anniversary+of+the+company%E2%80%99s+founding.+In+1986%2C+the+company+formulated+a+new+vision+called+%E2%80%99%3Cb%3ENYK%3C%2Fb%3E21.%E2%80%99+We+have+announced+a+policy+to+restructure+our+business+to+become+a+comprehensive+logistics+company%2C+not+just+a+shipping+company.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CAs+customer+needs+change+and+diversify%2C+it+has+become+difficult+to+survive+solely+on+shipping.+The+aim+was+to+evolve+into+a+comprehensive+logistics+company+spanning+land%2C+sea+and+air%2C+and+provide+new+added+value.+It+was+around+that+time+that+we+pointed+out+the+importance+of+the+logistics+business+and+the+first+NCA+%28Nippon+Cargo+Airlines%29+plane+flew+from+Japan+to+San+Francisco.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+most+impressive+country+between+2005+and+2019+is+China.+As+China+entered+a+period+of+rapid+economic+growth%2C+it+began+importing+large+quantities+of+iron+ore%2C+which+is+used+as+a+raw+material+for+steel+products+necessary+for+infrastructure+development.+The+supply+of+bulkers+to+transport+these+cargoes+became+tight%2C+leading+to+a+shipping+bubble+and+a+shipbuilding+boom.+However%2C+the+situation+changed+dramatically+after+the+Global+Financial+Crisis.+The+high+cost+of+ships+built+in+large+quantities+during+the+bubble+period+became+a+hindrance%2C+leading+to+a+sluggish+market+and+poor+performance+for+shipping+companies.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CEven+in+a+difficult+situation+that+was+shaking+the+business+foundations%2C+it+was+a+bold+decision+by+the+management+at+the+time+that+Japanese+3+big+carriers%2C+including+our+company%2C+separated+their+containership+business+and+established+a+new+company%2C+%E2%80%99Ocean+Network+Express+%28ONE%29.%E2%80%99+It+was+also+visionary.%E2%80%9D+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+company+has+a+special+attachment+to+the+container+shipping+business.+There+is+also+a+sense+of+mission+to+protect+the+business.+What+was+needed+to+protect+the+container+shipping+business+was+to+get+bigger.+I+also+worked+in+the+container+ship+division+for+13+years%2C+but+I+never+imagined+joining+forces+with+%3Cb+style%3D%27color%3A%230000cd%27%3EMOL%3C%2Fb%3E+or+%E2%80%9CK%E2%80%9DLine.+It+was+a+big+decision+and+a+big+challenge+to+come+up+with+this+idea+and+put+it+into+action.+ONE+has+performed+extremely+well+as+a+hub+for+container+shipping+when+it+boomed+after+the+coronavirus+pandemic.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CFinally%2C+regarding+2020+and+onwards%2C+the+coronavirus+pandemic+was+an+opportunity+for+society+and+shippers+to+reaffirm+the+importance+of+logistics.+As+many+social+issues%2C+such+as+global+warming+and+the+global+pandemic%2C+become+apparent%2C+companies+are+now+placing+importance+not+only+on+their+economic+value+but+also+on+their+social+value.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+company+has+also+placed+ESG+%28Environmental%2C+Social%2C+and+Governance%29+at+the+core+of+its+management+and+established+a+system+to+use+it+as+a+basis+for+management+decisions.+Based+on+the+financial+foundation+strengthened+by+our+unprecedented+performance+since+the+coronavirus+pandemic%2C+we+aim+to+achieve+further+growth+by+using+decarbonization+as+a+catalyst+to+contribute+to+the+realization+of+a+sustainable+society.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+transfer+of+NCA+to+ANA+Holdings+was+a+difficult+decision.+This+is+because+it+would+halt+the+trend+of+becoming+a+comprehensive+logistics+company+spanning+land%2C+sea+and+air.+Although+the+company%E2%80%99s+financial+foundation+has+become+stronger%2C+it+is+not+easy+to+simultaneously+invest+in+decarbonizing+shipping+and+in+replacing+cargo+aircraft.+We+have+decided+that+transferring+NCA+to+ANA+is+the+best+way+to+increase+the+company%E2%80%99s+value.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+our+medium-term+management+plan+that+began+in+FY+2023%2C+we+have+set+out+a+new+vision+of+%E2%80%99go+beyond+the+scope+of+a+comprehensive+global+logistics+enterprise.%E2%80%99+We+pursue+the+creation+of+added+value%2C+not+being+limited+b
