%E3%80%80The+era+has+changed+from+Heisei+to+Reiwa+and+the+shipbuilding+industry+is+revitalizing+in+Japan+and+overseas.+How+will+the+shipbuilding+industry%2C+which+is+at+a+turning+point%2C+survive+in+a+difficult+situation%3F+We+interviewed+Shuta+Teranishi%2C+president+of+Sanwa+Dock%2C+which+has+a+high+level+of+technical+skill+in+ship+repair.+%28Interviewer%3A+Ichiho+Asano%29+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--What+is+the+Sanwa+Dock%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+addition+to+general+repair+business+for+domestic+and+ocean+vessels%2C+we+are+engaged+in+engineering+business+of+Ballast+Water+Management+System+%28BWMS%29+and+SOx+%28sulfur+oxide%29+scrubber+%28exhaust+gas+cleaning+system%29+utilizing+3D+laser+scanner+and+3D+design.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CRetrofit+%28modification+of+existing+ships%29+work+has+been+accumulated+by+BWMS+up+to+about+70+ships.+The+orderbook+on+hand+is+about+30+ships.+Of+these%2C+about+10+LNG+%28liquefied+natural+gas%29+carriers+have+been+ordered+in+lots.+As+for+the+track+record+of+scrubber%2C+we+have+5+vessels+equipped+with+our+company+and+2+vessels+that+have+only+been+engineered.+About+4+constructions+will+be+fixed+in+the+future.%E2%80%99%E2%80%99+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+particular%2C+the+repair+of+coastal+vessels+is+the+core+of+our+business+and+this+is+why+we+exist.+The+route+is+fixed+to+a+certain+extent+and+it+is+easy+to+set+up+a+docking+schedule+leading+to+stable+earnings.+In+addition%2C+coastal+ships+are+not+standardized%2C+there+are+various+types+of+ships+such+as+sulfur+carriers+and+cement+ships+and+we+have+been+evaluated+for+our+technical+strength+by+repairing+difficult+cargo+handling+equipment.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Potential+for+domestic+return+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+do+you+see+the+business+environment%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CDomestic+transportation+demand+is+declining+overall+and+the+way+of+thinking+of+international+shipping+trade+is+diversifying.+Under+the+current+slump+in+the+global+economy%2C+structural+reforms+of+shipper+companies+are+progressing+and+the+ocean+and+coastal+vessels+departing+from+and+arriving+in+Japan+are+also+undergoing+an+enormous+change.+Significant+changes+will+also+occur+in+the+Japanese+ship+repair+industry%2C+where+these+ships+were+the+main+business+targets.%E2%80%99%E2%80%99+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+impact+of+this+coronavirus+disaster+will+change+the+way+Japanese+carriers+think+about+repair+yards+from+the+perspective+of+BCP+%28Business+Continuity+Plan%29.+I+think+that+there+is+a+possibility+that+the+tendency+of+domestic+regression+will+intensify+and+that+it+will+accelerate+diversification+globally.+There+will+be+various+companies.+I+don%E2%80%99t+think+we%E2%80%99re+at+the+point+where+we+can+say+anything+clear+about+the+overall+picture+of+the+impact+of+coronavirus%2C+but+it%E2%80%99s+definitely+going+to+have+a+big+impact.%E2%80%99%E2%80%99+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Change+to+repair+business+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--Technical+progress+cannot+be+ignored.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+digitization+of+ships+itself+does+not+lead+to+increased+sales+at+repair+yards.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIf+the+IoT+%28Internet+of+Things%29+of+ships%2C+which+is+being+promoted+by+NYK%2C+enables+remote+maintenance+from+land+to+the+network%2C+it+will+extend+the+life+of+institutions+and+equipment.+Until+now%2C+stable+engine+operation+was+basically+based+on+regular+maintenance+of+engines%2C+but+if+maintenance+frequency+is+reduced%2C+ship+owners+will+be+able+to+reduce+costs+but+the+demand+for+repairs+itself+will+decrease.+It+may+also+be+possible+to+reduce+the+frequency+of+physical+docks%2C+such+as+remote+ship+inspections.%E2%80%9D+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CVessels+that+are+capable+of+reducing+greenhouse+gas+%28GHG%29+by+50%25+as+set+forth+by+the+International+Maritime+Organization+%28IMO%29+will+be+created.+Maintenance+and+maintenance+of+engines+that+burn+new+fuel+such+as+LNG+fuel+will+be+different+in+frequency+and+method+compared+to+existing+diesel+engines.+The+world+of+ships+will+change+drastically+in+the+next+10+years.+But+whatever+the+shape+of+the+ship%2C+it+is+not+completely+maintenance-free.+Ship+repair+is+an+indispensable+existence+as+a+social+infrastructure+that+supports+the+island+industry%E2%80%99s+absolutely+necessary+shipping+industry.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+do+you+survive%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+changes+mentioned+above+are+not+of+a+nature+that+will+have+a+dramatic+effect+on+business+performance.+However%2C+it+should+become+effective+as+if+you+were+tightening+your+neck+with+cotton.+Our+engineering+business+is+ready+for+the+future+and+will+be+particularly+powerful+during+the+transition+to+a+world+where+ships+are+now+at+the+concept+stage%2C+which+is+commonplace.%E2%80%9D+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+speed+of+technology+advancement+is+fast+and+will+change+in+a+year+or+two.+However%2C+the+life+of+a+ship+is+very+long%2C+20-30+years%2C+so+we+cannot+keep+up+with+the+environmental+regulations+that+become+stricter+year+by+year+within+the
