%E3%80%80Greek+shipowner+Alberta+Shipmanagement+%28headquartered+in+Athens%29+owns+and+manages+a+diverse+fleet+of+approximately+20+vessels%2C+including+crude+oil+tankers%2C+product+carriers%2C+chemical+tankers%2C+and+dry+bulk+carriers.+We+spoke+to+CEO+%28Chief+Executive+Officer%29+Nicholas+Inglessis+about+steering+the+shipowner+business+and+the+partnership+with+Japan.+%28Interviewer%3A+Azumi+Kashiwai%29+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--I%E2%80%99d+like+to+hear+about+Alberta+Shipmanagement%E2%80%99s+history+and+strengths.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+a+relatively+young+company%2C+founded+in+2019%2C+but+our+family%E2%80%99s+shipping+history+goes+back+generations%2C+and+my+daughters%2C+the+next+generation%2C+are+also+involved+in+the+shipping+industry.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+strength+lies+in+our+rich+experience%2C+which+is+deeply+rooted+across+generations.+I+myself+grew+up+listening+to+stories+about+shipping+from+a+young+age%2C+and+visited+many+ships+during+my+student+days.+The+first+time+I+heard+a+discussion+about+markets+was+in+1969%2C+when+I+was+14+years+old.+These+experiences+instilled+in+me+a+deep+understanding+of+the+industry.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CMy+daughters+have+had+similar+experiences%2C+visiting+shipyards+and+ships+from+an+early+age.+Of+course%2C+it%E2%80%99s+not+just+tradition%2C+but+a+genuine+passion+for+the+shipping+industry+must+be+there.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Speed+is+of+the+essence+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CAnother+major+strength+is+the+ability+to+make+quick+decisions.+Speed+is+of+the+essence+when+it+comes+to+shipping.+Large+companies+have+unique+advantages%2C+such+as+size%2C+but+board+approval+can+take+weeks.+At+Greek+shipowners%2C+which+are+family-run%2C+decision-making+is+often+done+by+one+person%2C+and+important+final+decisions+can+be+made+within+minutes.+Our+ability+to+act+quickly+and+flexibly%2C+backed+by+experience%2C+is+what+gives+us+a+competitive+advantage.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--The+company+has+a+diverse+fleet+of+20+vessels%2C+including+bulkers+ranging+from+VLCCs+%28Very+Large+Crude+Carrier%29%2C+Suezmax+and+aframax+tankers%2C+Capesize+ships+to+Handy+ships%2C+product+carriers%2C+and+chemical+tankers.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CDiversification+has+worked+well+for+us+over+the+years.+When+one+segment+of+a+market+is+underperforming%2C+another+is+often+doing+better%2C+and+diversification+helps+balance+overall+business+performance.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+do+you+secure+fleet+deployment+contracts%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+decision+is+based+on+market+conditions.+When+we+find+a+long-term+deal+that+makes+financial+sense%2C+we+pursue+it.+Otherwise%2C+we+develop+our+business+on+a+spot+basis.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CHowever%2C+long-term+contracts+have+become+less+common+in+recent+years.+When+I+first+entered+the+shipping+industry+in+the+1970s%2C+there+were+many+five-+and+ten-year+contracts.+Currently%2C+a+contract+of+three+years+plus+two+additional+years+is+considered+long-term.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+First+Japanese-built+ship+in+1965+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--Most+of+the+company%E2%80%99s+fleet+is+built+in+Japan%2C+and+the+company+has+built+strong+ties+with+the+Japanese+shipbuilding+industry%2C+including+securing+backlogs+of+Suezmax+orders+at+Nihon+Shipyard.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+family%E2%80%99s+history+in+newbuilding+programs+began+in+1965+with+the+construction+of+our+first+ship+in+Japan.+However%2C+in+the+1980s%2C+the+shipping+market+stagnated%2C+and+there+were+no+new+orders+for+a+while.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CI+first+visited+Japan+in+1998.+Initially%2C+the+company+purchased+second-hand+Japanese-built+ships%2C+and+in+2001+signed+its+first+shipbuilding+contract+with+Hitachi+Zosen.+The+vessel+was+delivered+in+record+time%2C+just+11-12+months+after+the+contract+was+signed.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CSince+then%2C+we+have+continued+to+build+new+ships+in+Japan.+In+the+past+22+years%2C+only+one+ship+has+been+ordered+outside+of+Japan.+We+have+long-standing+cooperative+relationships+not+only+with+shipyards+but+also+with+Japanese+trading+companies+and+financial+institutions.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80--How+are+you+proceeding+with+raising+funds+for+fleet+development%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CJapanese+finance+has+a+strong+structure%2C+is+transparent+and+highly+reliable.+On+the+other+hand%2C+Greek+banks+have+become+more+competitive+in+recent+years.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWhen+Greece+was+facing+the+financial+crisis%2C+ship+financing+remained+one+of+the+most+stable+sectors+for+Greek+banks.+Against+this+backdrop%2C+in+recent+years%2C+Greek+financial+institutions+have+been+able+to+offer+competitive+interest+rates%2C+and+we+have+been+focusing+even+more+on+expanding+ship+financing.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+evaluating+financing+options+on+a+case-by-case+basis.+Japan%E2%80%99s+fixed-rate+sale-and-leasebacks+were+particularly+attractive+at+a+time+when+dollar+in
