Interview with Mr Cyril Ducau, CEO of Eastern Pacific Shipping “Standing at the forefront of maritime innovation”

%E3%80%80Singapore+shipping+major+%3Cb%3EEastern+Pacific+Shipping%3C%2Fb%3E+%28EPS%29+has+a+fleet+of+more+than+200+vessels+and+is+a+leader+in+the+shipping+industry+with+pioneering+investments+in+GHG+%28greenhouse+gas%29+reduction+technologies.+We+asked+CEO+%28Chief+Executive+Officer%29+Cyril+Ducau+about+the+ordering+plan+for+next-generation+fuel+vessels+and+growth+strategy.+%3Cbr%3E%28Interviewer+Azumi+Kashiwai%29+%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-On+6th+June%2C+the+first+day+of+the+Posidonia%2C+EPS+announced+it+intends+to+order+an+ammonia+dual-fuel+gas+carrier+which+will+be+built+at+Hyundai+Heavy+Industries+%28HHI%29.+%3Cbr%3EAs+an+independent+tonnage+provider%2C+we+are+one+of+the+leaders+in+ammonia+shipping+today.+About+half+of+our+MGC+and+LGC+fleet+carries+ammonia+as+cargo+and+our+crew+is+fully+trained+to+handle+it.+In+addition%2C+we+have+a+very+good+understanding+of+the+trade+and+strong+client+relationships+in+place+%3Cbr%3EThese+new+buildings+will+be+LPG+and+ammonia+carriers.+We+think+it+is+logical+for+the+first+step+of+an+ammonia-fueled+ship+because+you+can+use+ammonia+from+a+cargo+tank.+This+project+will+be+carried+out+through+a+partnership+with+HHI%2C+ABS%2C+and+Singapore+MPA.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-EPS+group%E2%80%99s+investment+program+is+always+forward-thinking+and+capturing+the+best+timing.+What+are+the+basic+investment+policies+that+your+company+focuses+on%3F%3Cbr%3EWe+are+guided+by+a+simple+philosophy%3A+Sustainability+begins+with+Accountability.+With+this+mindset+as+our+guide%2C+we+invest+in+three+key+areas%3A+fleet+rejuvenation%2C+the+adoption+of+technology%2C+and+the+use+of+alternative+marine+fuels.+%3Cbr%3EOur+company+now+has+more+than+200+ships.+As+one+of+the+industry%E2%80%99s+leaders%2C+we+make+it+a+point+that+we+must+try+to+break+the+barrier.+We+lead+by+example.+You+cannot+just+sit+back+and+say%2C+%E2%80%9CWe+cannot%E2%80%9D%2C+%E2%80%9CIt+is+not+possible%E2%80%9D+or+%E2%80%9CWe+are+not+ready%E2%80%9D.+Now%2C+our+dual-fuel+vessels+account+for+56+of+our+70++newbuilding+order+book.%3Cbr%3EWe+understand+that+there+will+not+be+a+single+solution+that+will+get+us+to+net+zero+tomorrow+but+if+you+add+various+solutions+together%2C+you+can+lower+the+emission+quite+dramatically+today.+%3Cbr%3EWe+are+lucky+because+we+have+diversification+across+all+segments.+Also%2C+we+are+part+of+the+industrial+group+with+oil+refineries+and+commodities+companies.+We+feel+that+we+have+a+good+understanding+of+where+things+are+going.+I+think+IMO+2023+regulations%2C+EEXI+and+CII%2C+will+be+a+game-changer+for+the+industry.+You+must+adapt+because+if+not+your+fleet+is+going+to+be+obsolete.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-How+does+EPS+group+balance+GHG+reduction+and+economic+efficiency%3F%3Cbr%3EThere+is+a+cost+to+pay+for+decarbonization+features+on+ships%2C+but+the+world+and+industry+are+moving+towards+sustainable+business+practices.+We+are+already+seeing+charterers+requiring+clear+emission+lowering+agendas+from+tonnage+providers+before+even+considering+other+commercial+aspects.+%3Cbr%3EFor+big+charterers+like+CMA-CGM%2C+MSC%2C+BHP%2C+Rio+Tinto+and+Equinor%2C+it%E2%80%99s+very+important+for+them+to+have+tonnage+which+is+efficient+and+environmentally+friendly.+We+see+that+companies+are+willing+to+pay+a+premium+for+ships+that+meet+these+criteria.+%3Cbr%3EThis+trend+will+only+continue+to+grow.+By+investing+today%2C+we+can+lead+the+energy+transition+by+making+a+positive+impact+on+environmental+preservation+while+also+ensuring+long-term+security+for+the+business.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-How+about+a+fleet+deployment+policy.%3Cbr%3EWe+look+at+portfolios.+For+instance%2C+we+have+long-term+charter+contracts+for+containerships+and+ethane+carriers+for+up+to+15+years.+Then+we+have+a+medium-term+charter+for+up+to+five+years+for+Newcastle+max%2C+Capesize+new+buildings%2C+some+tankers%2C+and+MGCs.+Also%2C+we+have+spot+ships+of+Aframax%2C+most+MR+tankers%2C+and+existing+Capesizes.+It+is+a+good+mix.+Overall%2C+we+have+secured+our+time+charter+contract%E2%80%99s+backlog+almost+as+big+as+the+value+of+the+fleet.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-How+about+your+policies+in+finance%3F%3Cbr%3EWe+prefer+moderate+leverage%2C+around+50%25.+We+finance+with+our+balance+sheet.+Our+reputation+is+also+very+important.+More+than+30+banks+are+lending+to+us.+There+are+all+sorts+of+institutions%2C+European+banks%2C+Asian+banks%2C+Japanese+banks%2C+and+Chinese+leasing+houses.+We+also+have+done+JOLCO+transactions+for+new+building+container+ships+last+year.+%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-Please+tell+me+about+your+expectations+for+future+partnerships+with+the+Japanese+maritime+industry.%3Cbr%3EEPS+has+always+had+a+long%2C+rich+history+with+Japanese+shipyards%2C+financial+institutions%2C+shipyards%2C+charterers%2C+ship+owners+and+trading+houses.+This+started+in+the+early+1980s+when+Mr+Idan+Ofer+started+frequently+visiting+the+Japanese+shipping+community+and+building+trusted+business+relationships.+Now%2C+Mr+Yosuke+Hayasaka+represents+our+Japanese+office%2C+and+I+visit+Japan+very+often.+%3Cbr%3EShipping%E2%80%99s+progress+is+a+collaborative+effort.+We+look+forward+to+strengthening+our+existing+and+mutually+beneficial+shipbuilding+and+financing+relationships+in+Japan+while+simultaneously+working+together+on+ways+to+improve+decarbonization%2C+seafarer+wellbeing%2C+and+maritime+innovation+efforts.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-How+do+you+select+Japanese%2FKorean%2FChinese+shipyards%3F%3Cbr%3EIt+depends+on+the+ship+types.+We+find+that+with+the+Japanese+yen+depreciating+now%2C+the+Japanese+yard+will+recover+its+competitiveness+against+the+Korean+yard.+We+very+much+like+Japanese+high-quality+ships+and+look+forward+to+continuing+our+partnership+with+Japanese+shipyards.+%3Cbr%3ERecently+in+Japan%2C+we+built+MR+product+tankers+at+Onomichi+Dockyard%2C+chemical+tankers+at+Asakawa+Shipbuilding%2C+and+container+ships+at+Imabari+Shipbuilding.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-Could+you+tell+me+the+shipping+market+prospects%3F+%3Cbr%3EIn+the+medium+term%2C+I+think+LNG+shipping+is+very+interesting.+The+spot+charter+rate+for+LNG+carriers+might+reach+%24200%2C000+daily+this+winter+because+of+strong+demand+from+Europe+against+the+backdrop+of+lack+of+Russian+gas.+The+PCTC+market+is+also+going+up+because+of+a+small+order+book+and+the+automobile+companies+demand+more+tonnage.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-Please+tell+me+about+the+basic+philosophy+of+your+%22No+Coal+Cargo%22+policy.+How+are+you+breaking+away+from+coal+transportation%3F+%3Cbr%3ELast+autumn%2C+COP26+resulted+in+the+Glasgow+Climate+Pact%2C+which+is+the+first+agreement+that+specifically+targets+the+phasing+down+of+coal%2C+which+is+regarded+as+the+most+significant+contributor+to+climate+change.+To+support+this+transition%2C+vessels+commercially+managed+by+EPS+will+follow+a+No+Coal+Cargo+Policy.+EPS+has+not+carried+coal+as+cargo+on+our+commercially+managed+dry+bulk+fleet+since+April+2020.+%3Cbr%3EThe+policy+also+aims+to+be+a+message+to+the+maritime+industry+that+decarbonization+isn%E2%80%99t+exclusive+to+how+we+move+ships+-+what+we+move+also+matters.%3Cbr%3EExisting+vessels+in+our+dry+bulk+fleet+are+operated+in+the+spot+market%2C+so+all+of+them+are+under+our+commercial+management.+For+example%2C+our+Capesize+and+Newcastlemax+bulkers+only+carry+iron+ore.+On+the+other+hand%2C+our+dry+bulk+newbuilding+vessels+will+be+time+chartered+out+to+BHP+and+Rio+Tinto+upon+delivery.+Therefore%2C+these+vessels+will+be+commercially+managed+by+the+charterers.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3E-EPS+is+planning+an+onboard+trial+of+the+Carbon+Capture+system.+How+do+you+view+the+importance+of+the+Carbon+Capture+solution%3F+%3Cbr%3EWe+believe+carbon+capture+holds+significant+promise+for+reducing+emissions+for+existing+and+future+ocean-going+vessels%2C+which+will+play+a+major+role+in+the+industry%E2%80%99s+energy+transition+and+decarbonization+efforts.+It+will+fit+any+type+of+ship+and+is+complementary+to+our+other+efforts+to+reduce+emissions%2C+including+the+use+of+biofuels.+We+are+working+on+the+world%E2%80%99s+first+full-scale+marine+deployment+with+a+Dutch+company+called+Value+Maritime.+The+system+we+are+installing+will+be+able+to+capture+up+to+40%25+of+the+CO2+from+the+exhaust+and+we+can+modulate+the+capture+ratio+as+needed.+%3Cbr%3EWe+are+retrofitting+two+of+our+MR+tankers+built+at+Onomichi+Dockyard+and+they+will+be+ready+in+December+this+year.+The+system+consists+of+a+high-efficiency+scrubber+%28which+also+removes+particulates%29+and+a+CO2+capture+stage.+The+CO2+reacts+with+a+special+chemical+and+is+then+stored+in+one+of+our+fuel+oil+bunker+tanks%2C+which+we+will+retrofit+by+applying+a+special+coating.+The+liquid+is+pumped+out+during+the+next+port+visit+and+will+be+transported+via+barge+or+truck+to+the+end-user+for+CO2.+%3Cbr%3EBased+on+the+dedicated+tank+capacity%2C+these+ships+will+be+able+to+complete+a+two-week+rotation+with+a+40%25+effective+capture+rate.+If+you+reduce+the+ratio+to+10%25%2C+longer+voyages+of+40++days+will+be+possible+which+makes+the+system+very+flexible.+Initially%2C+CO2+will+be+offloaded+mainly+in+Rotterdam+and+the+CO2+will+be+used+in+greenhouses+to+stimulate+plant+growth+%28which+is+essentially+a+form+of+biogenic+carbon+capture%29%3B+in+the+long+run+we+expect+to+use+the+CO2+to+produce+our+synthetic+fuels+to+be+re-used+in+our+fleet.+We+are+also+working+on+developing+CO2+offloading+stations+in+the+US%2C+UK+and+other+locations+in+Europe.+We+hope+to+expand+this+to+Asia+with+an+increase+in+demand.+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E-Ship+management+is+becoming+increasingly+important+in+terms+of+preventing+accidents+and+dealing+with+new+fuels.+Please+tell+us+about+your+company%E2%80%99s+efforts+to+strengthen+the+ship+management+capability.%3Cbr%3EOur+mission+at+EPS+is+to+be+the+safe+and+efficient+transportation+provider+of+choice+to+the+shipping+industry.+That+means+EPS+needs+to+be+at+the+forefront+of+innovation+and+build+on+our+reputation+for+excellence+in+the+way+we+serve+our+customers%2C+run+our+business%2C+and+strive+for+environmental+preservation.%3Cbr%3EHigh-quality+ship+management+is+the+backbone+of+the+organization.+In+addition%2C+to+manage+the+exponential+growth+across+our+fle
