[Interview] DryDel Shipping CEO Strategizes Expansion via Japanese-Built Fleet and Strategic Partnerships

%E3%80%80Costas+Delaportas%2C+CEO+%28Chief+Executive+Officer%29+of+Greek+shipping+company+%3Cb%3EDryDel+Shipping%3C%2Fb%3E+%28headquartered+in+Athens%29%2C+spoke+to+this+newspaper+and+said%2C+%E2%80%9CCapesize+ships+have+great+potential%E2%80%9C+in+terms+of+ship+investment.+Regarding+the+shipbuilding+industry+revitalization+measures+supported+by+the+Japanese+government%2C+he+expressed+his+hope+and+said%2C+%E2%80%9CThe+options+for+ordering+new+ships+in+Japan+will+expand.%E2%80%9C+We+asked+Mr.+Delaportas+about+his+management+policy.+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-I%E2%80%99d+like+to+start+by+asking+about+the+company%E2%80%99s+overview.+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+an+owner-operator+of+dry+bulk+carrier+company%2C+with+a+core+fleet+of+37+vessels%2C+including+12+owned+vessels+and+25+long-term+chartered+vessels.+The+main+ship+types+range+from+Handysize+to+Kamsarmax.+The+average+age+of+the+vessels+is+very+young+at+4+years.+In+total%2C+we+operate+a+fleet+of+approximately+60+vessels%2C+including+short-term+charters+and+new+ships+on+order.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CAll+of+our+owned+ships+are+high-quality+ships+built+in+Japan.+All+long-term+chartered+vessels+are+also+chartered+from+Japanese+shipowners.+There+are+11+new+ships+on+order%2C+which+will+be+built+at+Japanese+shipyards+and+delivered+by+2029.+The+backlog+includes+four+large+Capesize+ships.+In+the+operator+business%2C+we+transport+approximately+6+to+7+million+tons+of+various+dry+bulk+cargoes+annually.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-What+do+you+think+is+the+reason+for+your+steady+growth%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9COur+growth+is+driven+by+three+principles%3A+%E2%80%99quality+over+quantity%2C%E2%80%99+%E2%80%99hands-on+management%2C%E2%80%99+and+%E2%80%99partnership.%E2%80%99+Rather+than+pursuing+scale%2C+we+focus+on+providing+high-quality+services+by+investing+in+fuel-efficient+Japanese-built+ships+and+managing+our+own+ships.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CThe+shipping+business+requires+speed.+In+the+Greek+market%2C+we+have+adopted+a+unique+owner-operator+business+model%2C+which+allows+us+to+have+contact+with+cargo+and+increase+the+quantity+and+quality+of+market+information+we+can+gather%2C+enabling+us+to+make+swift+and+disciplined+decisions.+We+also+place+importance+on+relationships+with+shippers%2C+charterers%2C+shipyards%2C+financial+institutions%2C+etc.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CAccess+to+cargo+is+our+strength.+I+have+always+claimed+that+%E2%80%99Cargo+is+King%E2%80%99.+The+company+has+established+bases+in+Singapore%2C+Dubai+in+the+Middle+East%2C+Sao+Paulo+in+South+America%2C+and+Houston+in+North+America+in+order+to+strengthen+its+relationships+with+shippers+and+local+shipping+industry+professionals.+Maintaining+a+position+close+to+cargo+is+the+key+to+success.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0Business+opportunities+in+Capesize+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-Why+are+you+focusing+your+investments+on+Capesize%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+ordered+one+Capesize+vessel+from+Namura+Shipbuilding+in+December+last+year.+There+are+four+new+Capesize+ships+on+order%2C+all+of+which+will+be+built+at+Namura+Shipbuilding.+We+aim+for+further+growth+by+diversifying+ship+types+and+broadening+the+scope+of+our+business.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CCapesize+has+great+potential.+There+are+three+reasons+for+this%3A+the+emergence+of+new+trade+patterns%2C+the+aging+of+existing+ships%2C+and+the+backlog+of+new+ships+on+order+remaining+at+historically+low+levels.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CShipments+of+iron+ore+and+bauxite+from+mines+in+West+Africa%2C+such+as+Simandou%2C+will+begin+in+earnest.+New+transport+demand+is+expected+to+reach+100+million+tons+per+year.+However%2C+many+of+the+existing+ships+are+over+15+years+old%2C+and+approximately+40%25+of+the+fleet+are+older+ships.+Many+of+the+aging+ships+will+need+to+be+replaced+around+2028-2029.+Despite+this%2C+the+backlog+of+new+ships+on+order+is+only+about+9%25+of+the+existing+fleet.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-What+is+your+growth+strategy%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CIn+addition+to+diversifying+our+ship+types%2C+we+would+like+to+expand+our+own+fleet+and+increase+the+number+of+long-term+chartered+vessels+from+the+current+25+to+around+40.+We+are+also+considering+opening+new+bases%2C+but+the+most+important+thing+is+human+resources.+We+will+expand+our+global+network+after+hiring+the+right+people.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CWe+are+also+interested+in+tankers.+Currently%2C+market+conditions+are+soaring%2C+making+it+difficult+for+new+entrants+to+enter+the+market%2C+but+in+the+future%2C+if+the+right+opportunity+arises%2C+we+will+consider+investing+in+tankers.+We+would+like+to+enter+the+market+once+the+market+has+calmed+down.%E2%80%9C+%3Cbr%3E+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%96%A0+Sharing+with+Japanese+companies+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80-What+about+future+business+with+Japanese+companies%3F+%3Cbr%3E%E3%80%80%E2%80%9CSince+2010%2C+I+have+visited+Japan+four+to+five+times+a+year+and+have+built+very+good+relationships+with+the+Japa
